ChatGPT and Claude can retrieve web sources when answering questions, but making a page accessible does not guarantee a citation. Start by separating the provider's search crawler, user-triggered visits, and model-training crawler. Those are different purposes with different controls.
Your team can check whether important pages are accessible and whether their content answers a buyer's question. It cannot assign itself a permanent place in an AI answer.
Understand which bot does what
OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for search, GPTBot for potential training use, and ChatGPT-User for certain user-initiated visits. Search and training preferences can be configured independently. A user-triggered visit is not proof that the page is included in search.
Anthropic distinguishes Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, and ClaudeBot for search, user-directed retrieval, and potential model training respectively. Review each provider's current documentation when setting policy; one generic “AI bots” switch may combine decisions your organization wants to keep separate.
Check the actual page response
Start with a small set of commercial pages and helpful guides. Record the requested URL, final URL, response status, indexing directives, and whether the main answer is available as text. Check for login requirements, security challenges, broken redirects, and important facts available only inside images.
Review robots.txt and your hosting or security controls together. A permissive robots file does not resolve a challenge imposed elsewhere. Where logs are available, inspect verified requests. Changing a test tool's user-agent string alone does not prove a real provider can access the site.
Make the source easy to evaluate
A useful product page explains what the product does, who it fits, limitations that affect the decision, and the evidence behind its claims. A useful article identifies its author and supports technical claims with sources. Keep service names and company details consistent across related pages.
Use descriptive internal links so readers can move from an explanation to a relevant service or example. Structured data should describe the content that is actually there. It should not add claims the visitor cannot verify on the page.
Measure different signals separately
A crawler request, a citation, a visit, and an inquiry are different observations. Record the engine, question, date, mode, and cited URL when checking answers. Repeat the same set of relevant buyer questions over time rather than treating one screenshot as a result.
Use the AI visibility measurement guide to connect these observations to business reporting. If access is blocked, fix access first. If the page is accessible but vague, improve the answer. If citations occur without useful visits, review relevance and the next step.
Beqi's SEO and AEO work starts with this distinction: identify what can be checked, improve the website, and report the evidence without promising an assistant's answer.
